A Navy SEAL until his dishonorable discharge, Shane Laughlin has spent a year looking for work. With his last ten dollars burning a hole in his pocket, Shane finally finds work as a test subject at the Obermeyer Institute. At a point where he's willing to do almost anything to make some money, Shane's unprepared for the kind of scientific research that's conducted at the OI. Finding out there are people in the world known as 'Greater-Thans', those who can tap into regions of their brains that give them powers such as telekinesis, is bad enough; finding out the woman he just had a one night stand with, and is still hot for, is one of them and can take him down, SEAL or not, just might be more than Shane can handle.

As one of the top OI operatives, Michelle "Mac" Mackenzie is working hard on eradicating a new drug that's come onto the market called Destiny. With the promise of eternal youth and making one an instant Greater-Than, Destiny more than delivers but the user is instantly hooked and occasionally 'jokers', causing users to become violent and uncontrollable. Discovering the insatiable stranger she couldn't get enough of is a new recruit to the institute throws Mac off her stride. Though Shane is not a Greater- Than, he has more than enough talents of his own that make him useful. Used to doing things on her own, Mac has no desire to let anyone into her life, but keeping Shane away from her and out of her heart may be her greatest fight yet.

Fans of Suzanne Brockmann may be a bit thrown by her latest book, BORN TO DARKNESS, the first in a new paranormal series featuring individuals with unique abilities. I know some people have had a hard time getting into the dark subject matter, with the bases of how the drug Destiny is created, but personally, I was hooked from the get go. I thought the premise was original and the story was riveting. After each chapter I couldn't wait to read the next one to see what happens. The secondary characters are an integral part of this series and I was as hooked on their stories, especially Diaz and Elliot's, as I was on Shane and Mac's. There are a few different threads worked into BORN TO DARKNESS but Brockmann deftly handles each one and ensures no story goes incomplete. Romantic suspense is a genre Brockmann more than excels at; this is her forte and she is one of the best. I can't wait until the next book in this series and I hope this isn't the last we've seen of Mac or Shane. There's so much more to their story that I want to know.

Book Summary

In the not-too-distant future, the Obermeyer Institute (OI) has made a revolutionary discovery: With special training, humans can tap into the brain's hidden powers (think telepathy, telekinetic powers, super strength, and more). The training is strenuous, though, and it works only for those with natural potential. Tough girl Mac has that potential, and she's a devoted member of the OI. But there's one rule she can't help but bend. Her boss thinks celibacy is key to their work. Mac's learned differently—an active sexual life enhances her powers. And when she meets Shane, a sexy former Navy SEAL, the sparks are instant. But after the two spend an amazing night together, Mac finds out that Shane's a new recruit at the institute. How can she mix business and pleasure?
