After seeing her mother die before her eyes and her father and uncle engaged in a magic battle, Jessie has been shuttled from place to place, first as a child and now as an adult. She tries to make no ties, but affects everyone she touches. She keeps almost everything in her car in case her uncle finds her. She doesn't know what she is, but she's filled with Darkness, an unearthly power that is triggered by strong emotions.

Lachlan may have driven himself to a monastic existence due to guilt, but he still loves his brother. So, when his brother comes home talking of a special girl, and Lachlan's previously dormant astral projection kicks in, showing a horrific future, he knows he must do everything he can to save his brother.

Jessie's mother was caught between brothers, something that led to the misery Jessie witnessed as a child. Lachlan holds onto his honor with an iron grip, particularly as his brother falls into circumstances which have the power to tear them apart. However, Lachlan and Jessie have a hard time fighting the chemistry between them as they put their lives and souls on the lives fighting an evil not born of Darkness but of selfishness and greed.

DARKNESS BECOMES HER is an excellent stand-alone, but it makes readers want to grab the rest of the series because it is such a fascinating concept. The characters are realistic and gripping, and the events that occur would seem over-the- top if written by another, but Rush does an excellent job conveying the characters' reactions to the events as they unfold.
