"Is the "experiment" of a vampire-led town over?"

Vampires are vanishing. They all seem to know what's going on, at least the founder and her head cronies do, but the rest of Morganville's populace, human and vampire, seem to be spending more time taking sides for or against a human/vampire wedding. Everyone is stressed out, no one is acting like he or she usually does, and people are literally trying to (and sometimes succeeding) kill each other. Claire can't help but try to figure out what's going on, but the tensions keep building for Amelie, the town's Founder, Myrnin, Claire's wacky vampire boss, and Oliver, Amelie's right-hand man, sometimes adversary, and thwarted paramour. When the residents of Glass House (Eve, Michael, Shane, and Claire) start to figure out some of what's really going on, what the vampires don't want anyone to know, not even death can stop them from trying to make a final stand; however, this time the vampires and the humans have to work together, for real, to fight an enemy that the vampires know...and run from.

First, buy all of the books in the series and then read them through to this book in order to get the depth and layering of the entire series up through this novel. Next, start counting down the days until the next book. I don't often yell at my books. After a little time (you'll race through this book, trust me) reading and enjoying the heck out of LAST BREATH, I came to several points that had me yelling at the book, talking to the characters, and pretty much hoping that Rachel Caine had decided to release her next book, oh, the day after she released this one. This is fantastic.

Book Summary

With her boss preoccupied researching the Founder Houses in Morganville, student Claire Danvers is left to her own devices when she learns that three vampires have vanished without a trace. She soon discovers that the last person seen with one of the missing vampires is someone new to town-a mysterious individual named Magnus. After an uneasy encounter with Morganville's latest resident, Claire is certain Magnus isn't merely human. But is he a vampire-or something else entirely?
