Corp of Engineers demolitions expert and senator's daughter Danielle Roark's mission goes bad. After being captured, beaten and raped, she is charged by her own government with espionage. To prove her innocence, she must go back.

But this time she won't be alone. Former Green Beret Canyon "Midas" Metcalfe, now a member of Nightshade, knows something about missions gone bad. One destroyed his career. No way he can stand by and allow Dani to face certain danger, and perhaps worse than she encountered during her hostage situation, alone.

The hallmark of the Nightshade series is Ronie Kendig's ability to write heart-stopping romantic thrillers using her extensive knowledge of the military and Special Ops teams. In WOLFSBANE, book three of the Discarded Heroes series, Dani and Midas are both tortured by memories of missions gone bad. Not their fault, but the consequences are all theirs just the same. Both wish simply to be left alone, but Kendig, with her twisting, turning action, makes it such that there's no such chance for them. Not only are they not left alone, but they must unite in order for either of them to find redemption.

That all is not what it seems is a theme Kendig weaves from the beginning up to the last page. With suspense as thick as the dark of night and romance as palpable as a heartbeat, Kendig keeps readers glued to the pages. You feel Dani's pain. You agonize with Midas when his attempts to rescue Dani fall short. You cheer for them in one chapter, only for your emotions to be torn apart while reading the next.

Kendig can't write fast enough to satisfy my thirst for more of the Nightshade crew, and having devoured WOLFSBANE, the Metcalfe family too. Her characters are real but unique and lovable, from the baddest, toughest military operative to the Metcalfe family matriarch.

I'm pleased to know that Legend's story, Firethorn, releases in January. But it won't be enough, not nearly enough, to satisfy my hunger for more of Kendig's brand of military- themed suspense.
