One of her friends, Jennifer, is a real estate agent who is trying to close a deal on Fred Turner's mountain property. As luck would have it, the person making the offer is one of Kelly's clients. As Jennifer is making the trip up to Turner's property one weekend, she invites Kelly to accompany her. However, the two women end up finding Turner's dead body.
Jayleen, one of Kelly's friends, calls her a few days later, panicked. Jayleen is close friends with Turner's estranged wife, who has become a suspect in his murder. She asks Kelly to look into the case and see what she can find out. It turns out that Renee Turner has become a suspect because Jennifer and Kelly saw her leaving Fred's house as they were pulling up. Nevertheless, Kelly agrees to check into things.
As she has done in the prior Knitting Mysteries, Kelly tends to investigate mostly by following hunches and relying on the resources of Burt, a retired police detective who is another Lambspun friend. The confounder here is that Turner had a reputation for cheating people in real estate deals, so there's no shortage of motives or suspects!
Meanwhile, all of Kelly's friends are still learning how to navigate the post-break-up terrain. They are in the habit of including both her and Steve in their activities and conversation and often find themselves figuring out how to best balance their friendships with both parties. This made for a really interesting sub-plot, especially since it took forever for Kelly and Steve to get together. I found myself conflicted about whether I wanted them to get back together or whether I wanted Kelly to move on and explore other opportunities.
Overall, Maggie Sefton writes another great cosy. Knitting enthusiasts will appreciate the free pattern for a summer tee, as well as the vivid descriptions of the bright, luscious yarns residing in Lambspun. At the end, there was an inaccuracy with the legal proceedings that confused me (as someone who used to work in a district attorney's office), but otherwise this was the typical fun, light read that I've come to expect from Sefton.
Book Summary
The newest yarn from the national bestselling author of Skein of the Crime. Spring is in the air of Fort Connor, Colorado-a time of new beginnings for the House of Lambspun knitters. But for fellow knitter Jennifer's new real estate client, it is his end. He's been murdered and Kelly Flynn is left unraveling a tangle of clues. This may prove to be her most challenging project yet.
