HAUNTING DESIRE by Erin Quinn

"Quinn impresses again with a time travel masterpiece"

By: Erin Quinn

Genres: Paranormal Romance

Posted: May 31, 2011

The Mists of Ireland series picks up essentially where Haunting Warrior finished. For those unfamiliar with Quinn's books, they combine magic, romance, time travel and mystery with a lyrical prose style that has captivated readers far and wide. Technically categorized as paranormal romance, the large role that time travel plays and the complexity of the plot lines set Quinn's tales apart from many others.

During an argument with her father about a return to Ireland to visit the site of her mother's empty grave, Shealy O'Leary ends up in the land of Fennore, a place between worlds and on its own time where those who have tried to destroy the evil Book of Fennore are sent. Shealy is rescued by Tiarnan, a warrior whose decisions destroyed his own people who we met in Haunting Warrior , and his brother, Liam. Terrified but courageous, Shealy stays with Tiarnan and Liam, knowing that to find her father again, she will need help. A bond grows between her and Tiarnan, but Shealy doesn't realize yet that she possesses a power that will save or destroy them all.

The plot is entirely too complex with too many twists to give more details without spoilers, so I leave it to the readers to discover how and if Shealy can save herself and the ones she loves. Along the way, they confront enemies both human and animal, and many of the descriptions of the beasts are eerily realistic.

Once again, Quinn draws readers into her world from the outset. With time travel and the evil Book of Fennore at the center of the story, she weaves threads that flawlessly shift from past to present and back again without mishap. Quinn has a lyrical writing style enabling her to bring scenes to life for readers, so they exist in the moment rather than observing it from the outside.

HAUNTING DESIRE has action, romance, and magic aplenty and a fast pace that will keep a reader continually intrigued. This book had a bit more predictability than the previous two books, but this doesn't take away from enjoying the tale. Tiarnan and Shealy have strengths and flaws one can relate to, and many of the supporting cast are strong three-dimensional characters, especially Liam, whom I hope to learn more about in Dark Embrace, the final novel in the series due out in October.
