Shannon Dysart is determined to find a fabled city of gold in this wild, Wild West. Her father swore on his death bed that it existed. She just wants to prove his claim and clear his reputation as a scientist and scholar. Being left on a cliff-dwelling over a hundred feet up in the air with no way down is not helping her cause. Her group of hired help abandoned her, shot the rungs out of her only ladder, and took her father's map, running off to seek the treasure for themselves.

Gabe Lasley is on his way to visit one of his seven brothers when he hears a cry for help. It takes a little time to realize where the screams are coming from. He finds Shannon on the cliff, but can only get part of the way up to her. With a little creative thinking and using his roping skills, Gabe manages to get Shannon down, though at one point she is dangling over the edge of the cliff from his rope. The two set off for a Navajo village to regroup and reassess her mission.

Meanwhile, Back east in St. Louis, Shannon's mother is prodding Shannon's "intended," Buckstone (Bucky) Shaw, to go west and find Shannon, talk some sense into her, bring her back home and marry her. Both Bucky's and Shannon's mothers have been planning this high society wedding for years. Bucky sets off with a scout and his entourage of hired help.

When Gabe sends a telegraph to his brother Abe, telling him he will be late in arriving, Abe sets off with his own search party looking for Gabe and this mysterious woman he is helping. As these four groups of treasurer seekers converge on the Grand Canyon, each takes a different path down into its depths, some in search of gold, some in pursuit of other searchers and some in search of the real treasures in life. Navigating the canyon is a treacherous journey, but the view is a treasure all its own.

DEEP TROUBLE is an inspirational, historical gem about seeking worldly treasure and finding what is really important in life. There are some humorous moments and some awkward predicaments in which Shannon and Gabe find themselves, given the Indian culture and proper etiquette for the times.
