Skye is eagerly anticipating the opening of Tales and Treats. They carry books of all kinds and wonderful baked goods. The couple running the bookstore seems to have stirred up a lot of animosity in town even before the store opens.

Skye arranges to drop some old books with the owner for an evaluation. When she arrives, she discovers a woman crushed beneath a bookcase. Calling on the police chief and her fiancé, Wally Boyd, Skye is anxious to avoid getting caught up in the investigation.

Risé and Orlando Erwin have moved to town and put all their money into the bookstore. With people passing petitions and picketing the store, who knows how things will go. The day of the opening is an adventure when someone lets loose some chinchillas in the store causing a minor panic.

The next day, Skye discovers a body that she assumes to be Risé. When it turns out to be the body of a troubled teenager who works there, Skye will find herself in the middle. Kayla Wren was a young woman who had plans to leave Scumble River and make a name for herself in films. She was very talented and well-liked. Who would want to kill her? Or was the killer mislead by the brown ponytail and trying to kill Risé. Skye and Wally will have to do a great deal of digging into the Erwin's past and learn more about Kayla before the killer can be exposed.

Once again, fans of Skye and Scumble River will be drawn into the complications inherent in living in a small town as they search for the killer. Skye will be in danger as she tries to protect Kayla's best friend, Xenia. Xenia has taken a job at Tales and Treats to try and expose the killer. Denise Swanson has built a wonderful cast of characters who will delight the reader. They are so much fun that the reader will want to return to Scumble River again and again.
