SOMEBODY PICK UP MY PIECES is part of a series which began in the first book, One Day I Saw a Black King. After reuniting with all of her daughters (two of whom she abandoned as children), Charlotte Rodgers is left to face her own devils. Charlotte remains haunted by Uncle Lamont's brutal attempt to kill her after murdering her lover twenty-seven years earlier. While Charlotte survived the brutal beating, Uncle went to prison. Now upon his release, he is ready to reconnect with his own family. However, his niece, now the head matriarch of the family as well as the person he blames for his incarceration, refuses to allow him admittance. But Uncle is not swayed and remains determined to forge his way back in...by any means necessary.

In the meantime, Charlotte is blinded by her own painful past and will not even try to understand that her daughters have problems too. After losing her child in a car accident, Cammy leaves her mother alone in Murphy, Kansas, following her sisters, Connie and Reesy, to Denver, Colorado. Together they all struggle to pick up the pieces of their own wounded souls. Reesy's dilemma centers on forgiving her husband for his infidelity, and Connie deals with making the choice of whether or not she wants to marry the father of her newborn.

Mason deals with various themes including death, infidelity, forgiveness, and redemption. As well, the author introduces various new characters who are somewhat difficult to follow at times. Mason also provides a great deal of flashback to keep new readers abreast of the family's struggle, which works for that purpose; yet this practice may be a bit repetitive for loyal followers of the previous books in the series. Aside from those minor hiccups, Mason delivers with an unpredictable plot and well-drawn characters, perfectly balanced with action. In the end, there is the hint of resolve that answers the title request with "Okay, picking up in process."
