As a fledgling witch still trying out her new skills, Maggie O'Neill is slowly adjusting to her recently discovered empathic abilities. But breaking her leg and being dependent on others, even if that includes her hunky new guy Marcus, is frustrating for the normally independent Maggie. She's even more frustrated when she finds out that Marcus is considering delaying going back to school to finish his degree until she's better. Since she can't go back to her own basement apartment, and her best friend is moving away anyway, Maggie decides to look for a new, more accessible apartment.

Expecting that this will be a long process in the small town of Stony Mill, Maggie is extremely surprised when Marcus' Uncle Lou suggests the perfect place on her first day of searching, even if the manager is kinda creepy. But when she and Marcus go to sign the rental agreement the following day and find the said manager floating face-down in the swimming pool, Maggie definitely has second thoughts. But curious and encouraged by Marcus to test out her skills, Maggie still dives into the mystery only to find herself in the sights of the killer, leaving her to hope a little magic will do the trick to save her life and solve the murder.

HOME FOR A SPELL is the sixth novel in the Bewitching Mystery series, and by now, fans of Madelyn Alt's work are very familiar with Maggie and her Stony Mill companions. Alt brings new readers up to date on previous characters throughout the story, but very few of Maggie's actual family are included in this story. Instead, Alt concentrates this time around on Maggie's relationship with Marcus and her boss and fellow witch Felicity. There isn't too much witchy business found in this sassy and fast paced story, but it is still an entertaining read that should satisfy Alt's fans.

HOME FOR A SPELL is a fun and enjoyable installment in the series and really whets the reader's appetite for the excitement and intrigue that lies awaits Maggie next.

Book Summary

As the newest witch in Indiana, Maggie O’Neill already has plenty to deal with. So being hobbled by a broken leg doesn’t help. Neither does the fact that her best friend and upstairs neighbor is getting ready to tie the knot with her own boyfriend and move away. This leads Maggie to wonder if it isn’t time to find herself a new pad.

But when she finds a place, Maggie’s dream of new digs turns into a nightmare: the apartment manager is found dead before she can even sign the lease. And Maggie finds herself not only searching for a new home—but for a frightfully clever killer.
