After the way her last encounter went, New York Private Investigator Shiarra Waynest has learned her lesson about dealing with the paranormal elements of society, no matter how much money they offer. She does her best to keep her contact with anyone furred or fangy to a minimum; the exception to the rule being her boyfriend, Chaz, although his duties as Alpha wolf to the Sunstriker tribe are seriously cutting into their date time.

Her notoriety isn't helping. The sentient belt she wore to take on the bad guys has made her seem like the go-to gal for anything requiring the death or dismemberment of a powerful vamp or crazed wolfman, but how can she live with her actions when the belt comes off?

The White Hats, a violent pro-human group want Shia and her kick-butt belt on their side but their vigilante intimidation tactics are not her style. They paint all Others with the same tarry brush.

Then there is the public face of the vampires, Alec Royce, who holds her contract and wants to hold a lot more, any chance he gets.

Shia is able to keep both sides at bay until she learns a dangerous vamp named Max Carlyle is after her and she is out of her depth, belt or no belt.

Jess Haines has penned a sturdy blend of classic P.I. mystery and urban fantasy. Shia's wisecracking lightens the dark violence and at times disturbing storyline while never seeming out of place. I deem TAKEN BY THE OTHERS a solid read. Deceived By the Others will be published in July 2011.
