As Shakir pursues Nikki, joining forces to keep her safe, she reveals her five-year-old son is among the children being held by a clan known for torture and abuse. Trekking across the desert and evading the enemy is only part of Shakir's problems when he is told the child is his son. With his own secret past of murder and lack of feelings for the victims, Shakir believes his child deserves a better father image than himself. Shakir and Nikki, both bloody and barely clinging to life, negate the neat little family Nikki dreams of for herself.

I was completely enthralled with this exciting tale of the love and devotion a mother has for her child and all that she will sacrifice for him. Nikki has been transposed from a coddled princess to a determined survivor. The desperation spurring them on through the impossible makes this an extremely passionate and riveting tale, which ends too quickly. Linda Conrad has again created a brilliant story of love and courage.
