Barbara Bretton continues her light and cozy paranormal knitting mysteries with SPUN BY SORCERY. Casting Spells, and Laced with Magic are the first two books in the series.

Chloe Hobbs, yarn store owner, town mayor and half-human witch new to her talents, is done kicking butt and ready to start her new life with Luke MacKenzie, full human and brand new Chief of Police of Sugar Maple.

The evil Fae has been vanquished and all seems right with the world, until they head home for a hearty post-battle breakfast and smack face-first into an empty stretch of land where the entire town of Sugar Maple used to be. Everything is gone, her friends and neighbors, her cats, her yarn store, and oh gods, her stash!

Luke's cool head prevails, and he points out answers might lie in Salem, Massachusetts. Sugar maple was formed by the magical folk escaping the witch trials a few centuries back, maybe, just maybe some of them stayed behind. If so, the best chance of finding a way to bring back the town is to seek out their descendants. As Chloe and Luke set out to explore modern Salem, it soon becomes clear that magic is afoot, and someone or something wants to keep Chloe as far away from the solution as they can, no matter the cost.

I had a great time reading SPUN BY SORCERY. It was a well- told tale with plenty of plot twists and light-hearted moments. Bretton's gift for creating quirky and memorable characters is in full blossom, and her well-drawn settings are a great backdrop to the story. Knitters will love the references to Cookie A, Malabrigo and other craft-specific terms sprinkled throughout, but the story stands on its own, even if the reader has never sniffed a skein of yarn in their life. As a bonus, Barbara Bretton has gathered knitting tips and patterns at the back of the book making this a strong candidate for my Keeper Shelf.
