It's October 31, Halloween, or Samhain to followers of the Old Religion. Nashville teenagers are geared up to party the night away, while the younger children go trick-or-treating. While on her way to celebrate with her team, Taylor Jackson, who has just been reinstated as Homicide Lieutenant, receives the first call reporting a homicide.

Together again, Taylor and "her boys" head to the scene located in an affluent area of Nashville. They're still reeling from the horribly strange condition of the teenage boy discovered in his bedroom, when another call comes in reporting yet another murder. Before the evening is over, there will be seven bodies; all teenagers and all killed in eerily similar ways. An eighth victim is found barely alive. While trying to figure out what they could possibly have on their hands, Taylor's fiancé, John Baldwin (an FBI profiler) is called back to Quantico to deal with some problems of his own. It seems that Baldwin has some unfinished business that has come back to haunt him and, possibly, end his career. So Taylor is left with her very capable homicide team to help her solve this very ugly and sad crime.

It comes to light rather quickly that there are some elements of Witchcraft in the murders. A resident witch, Ariadne, has some knowledge of the perpetrators and comes forward offering her help. Taylor welcomes any real help she can get on this case, but Ariadne's kind of help, magical help, is not exactly what she has in mind. However, she grudgingly agrees to take Ariadne more seriously when the witch is spot-on with some of the case details.

Before long, Taylor is hot on the trail of a very twisted, yet dangerously powerful, young warlock. While Baldwin faces some of his past demons at Quantico, Taylor tries to stop any more murders. How strongly can she stand up against powerful forces that she never knew existed?

J.T. Ellison has crafted quite a story with THE IMMORTALS, and one that is very well worth taking the time to read. It offers chills, suspense, and a mysterious murderer; what all great murder mysteries contain. However, Ms. Ellison takes things a step further by incorporating elements of the Craft into this book. I was very impressed with the respect with which Wicca was treated in THE IMMORTALS. Not only was the Old Religion treated with respect, there were not the usual clichéd inaccuracies that you find in books written by non-believers. The only real problem this book presented for me is that now I MUST find the rest of her books! She has become my newest favorite writer, and I will definitely be keeping up with her!

Book Summary

It is Samhain - the Blood Harvest. Non-believers call it Hallowe'en. The night when eight Nashville teenagers are found dead, with occult symbols carved into their naked bodies. It's a ritual the killers believe was blessed by Death himself.

When children are victimized, emotions always run high, and this case has the public both outraged and terrified: a dangerous combination. Recently reinstated Homicide Lieutenant Taylor Jackson knows she has to act quickly, but tread carefully.

Exploring the baffling culture of mysticism and witchcraft, Taylor is immersed in a darkness that threatens to unbalance the order of her world, and learns how unchecked wrath can push a killer to his limits.
