In 1792, slave trade in Africa is a booming business for English aristocrats. Of course, it is not sanctioned by the Parliament, but it is still happening just the same. Grace Winslow finds herself one of their victims. Her village is raided, her baby is killed and her husband, Cabeto, is put on a slave ship to the West Indies and then to America. Grace is left to become the "personal slave" of Mr. Jasper Hathaway, one of the slave traders. She is put on another ship with him, setting sail for England.

Grace is a beautiful young lady, a half-breed, with light brown skin and auburn hair. Her English father is in the slave trade business and her mother is an African Princess. After a rebellion in the village, she chose to marry an African and stay there to raise their young son. Now her world is coming down around her. Mr. Hathaway was to be her intended, an arrangement of her parents. He is now seeking revenge.

As Grace travels the sea to England, she never gives up hope to find her beloved Cabeto. Scurvy almost claims Mr. Hathaway as they sail, so the captain of the ship sets Grace free in London to find her own way. She works as a washer woman while trying to find a way to make it to America to reunite with Cabeto. She learns a lot more about the slave trade business while in London and joins with the abolitionists there to tell her own story.

Grace often remembers the Bible stories that Mama Muco told her, especially the story of Esther. As she attempts to work her way back to Cabeto, she embraces the thought that she, like Esther, has come to where she is in life "for such a time as this."
