As Nicholas tries to identify the good side and the bad side, he's also getting closer to Darkwell's assistant, Olivia. With secrets of her own that she'll do anything to keep, Olivia finds her loyalties starting to split, but the self proclaimed good girl also would never break the rules, no matter what. With time running out and Nicholas growing frantic about not only his safety but also Olivia's, he has to convince her he's not trying to deceive her before it ends up costing them their lives.
TOUCHING DARKNESS is the third book in Jaime Rush's Offspring series. While visiting familiar characters from the series was a definite plus, I found I could not get into Nicholas and Olivia's story. Though well written, I just didn't feel the connection between the lead pair. I know Olivia's character was supposed to be an obedient kind of girl, but after a while her tendency to keep her head-in-the-sand got to be extremely frustrating. At times, Nicholas' efforts to save her felt pointless since you can't save someone who doesn't see the need for saving.
That having been said, if you have previously read this series, then you should absolutely check out TOUCHING DARKNESS. There is a lot that happens in regards to the storyline which sets up some new twists and offers a few answers. If you are new to these books, I suggest you start at the beginning. Though TOUCHING DARKNESS was definitely not what I would deem a keeper, it is absolutely worth reading if you enjoy the series.
