Sara Constantine's goal in life is to put away human monsters who commit crimes, crimes like her father's murder. However, when she is reassigned to Division 6, a secret section of the law that most recently falls under Homeland Security, Sara learns that not all monsters are human. She is to ensure that a vampire who has never been tried for his seemingly multiple crimes finally comes to justice. However, Sara feels she may have some difficulty with the case, as this is the vampire with whom she has become recently smitten after a passionate night. She has promised that she will seek justice, no matter what the outcome, but as she digs closer to the truth, Sara realizes that truth is not always black-and-white.

A fast read that sets up Beck's new series with interesting characters and lifetimes of inter-relationships and deceit, WHEN BLOOD CALLS produces some nice twists for an enjoyable read.

Book Summary

Attorney Sara Constantine is thrilled with her promotion— until she finds out that she must now prosecute vampires and werewolves. The first defendant she’ll be trying to put away? Lucius Dragos, the sexy stranger with whom she recently shared an explosive night of ecstasy.

When Lucius kisses a beautiful woman sitting next to him at the bar, he’s hoping only to avoid the perceptive gaze of the man he’s planning to kill. But what starts as a simple kiss ignites into an all-consuming passion. Charged with murder, Luke knows that Sara is determined to see him locked away—unless he can convince her that he’s not a monster. And that might mean making the ultimate sacrifice.
