Eden Riley had been scraping a living as a telephone psychic. After finding the missing pooch of the wife of the chief of police, her husband insists she be placed on the rolls as a psychic consultant to the men in blue. Reluctantly, Eden agrees. She is busy enough tying to make a go of her half of the detective agency she inherited from her mother, but it isn't bringing in much money. On her first official job for the police, Eden is tasked with tracking down a serial killer. When the killer is confronted he claims to be possessed, and grabs Eden as a hostage. When the police gun him down, the demon jumps ship from the killer to her. And life pretty much goes to hell from there.

Eden can't believe handsome, rugged (highly skeptical) police Detective Ben Hanson truly is interested in her, although she is willing to suspend disbelief long enough for a few dates, to see where the hunky cop might lead her. Darrack the Demon, although he promises to help a la Cyrano DeBergerac, in fact becomes a little jealous and mucks things up. It's a bit hard to explain puckering up for a kiss then slapping the guy before he can deliver. Eden hires a crazy-ass exorcist and her son from the yellow pages. But before they can do their stuff decides having Darrack in her life may not be such a bad thing after all, if it wasn't for the whole 'you'll be dead in a year' thing.

If Eden and Darrack can track down the witch that cursed him out of his physical form centuries ago, all will be well. In the meantime, her new-found paranormal vibe seems to be drawing all sorts of unusual clients to the detective agency, along with their even more unusual troubles.

THE DEMON IN ME is a great premise and although the book comes to a firm resolution, there is lots of leeway for future books in the series. The zany humor balances well with the moments of suspense. Michelle Rowan has provided a great escapist summer read.

Book Summary

Hell hath no fury…
Fate has led Eden Riley to become a “psychic consultant” to the police, even though her abilities are unreliable at best. Those paranormal powers are about to get her into a jam she couldn’t have predicted. After her hunky police detective partner guns down a serial killer in front of her, Eden realizes that she’s quite literally no longer alone. A voice in her head introduces himself as Darrak. He’s a demon. But not in a bad way!

…like a woman possessed.
Darrak lost his original body 300 years ago thanks to a witch’s curse. This is the first time he’s ever been able to speak directly to a host, plus there’s a bonus. Eden’s psychic energy helps him to take form during daylight hours. He wants to use this chance to find a way to break his curse — finally. Otherwise, Eden’s going to have to learn to live with this sexy demon…like it or not.

And she thinks she might like it.
