Abby Whitman has been a sleep walker since childhood, but hasn't done it since she was eleven and started a fire that destroyed her home and disfigured her younger sister. As an unconscious penance Abby now lives in the converted brick summer kitchen that had been part of her family's historic home. But it seems like Abby's luck has run out and her curse, as her Great-Grandmother Girault, a superstitious native from Louisiana called it, has returned. Abby awakened to mud on her feet and carpets, and her outside water hose running freely. Stress over her father's symptoms of dementia could be a factor in the sleep walking returning; stress and hormones are the two biggest factors in this problem.

Psychiatrist Jason Coble is divorced and has one natural daughter, Brenna, and one stepson he has raised since he was a baby, Bryce, and who Jason regards as his own. His ex-wife, Lucy, struggles with alcoholism but refuses to give up custody of the children. It has been a long time since Jason has been drawn to a woman, but Abby Whitman with her sweetness and patience with disabled children has definitely caught his attention. Abby and Jason are both ordering take-out dinner at the same time and decide to stay at the restaurant and share a meal. That is the last thing Abby remembers before awakening in her van which is partly submerged in a pond, and a young man thrown from a motorcycle and laying dead on the narrow road running beside the pond. Is she responsible for his death? Jason does not want to treat Abby because he has a personal interest in her. When she begins getting threatening phone calls about what she saw that night -- which of course she does not remember -- she must tell the sheriff about her sleep "driving" and naturally she becomes a suspect.

Susan Crandall has evolved from a wonderful contemporary relationship driven author, to a fantastic writer of romantic suspense/thriller tales. When the gift of penning breathtaking novels is in your genes, the sky is the limit for any genre. Believable characters with secrets and flaws, realistic dialogue, and mesmerizing narrative makes SLEEP NO MORE an outstanding read that will more than please the mystery lover.
