"Extremely rich and fanciful, but not a light read."

The war hungry Horsekin continue to force their way through the land, now only a combined strength of all the allies will keep the remains of the land free from harm. Evander continually makes his presence known from behind the scenes during what is not only the last book of The Silver Wyrm quartet, but the final book of the entire Deverry saga. Readers are treated to a story of war in a fantasy world, but from behind the scenes. Rarely does the reader encounter any actual combat. There are so many characters it is hard to keep them all straight, but during part one of THE SILVER MAGE readers are pulled into the story of Hwilli and Rhodorix. Their story showed how talented Katharine Kerr is as an author.

But throughout THE SILVER MAGE I felt like a coin being tossed into the air. Readers are tossed through time and to different places without a point of reference. Anyone just coming into the series, don't. Read at least from the beginning of the quartet on, or you'll be completely lost, thinking who is that again, or where is that, and continually going back to remind yourself who, what and where.

I, oddly enough, loved Evander. He played so many rolls that I couldn't help it, even if you didn't actually see him. Depending on the character's point of view he was a former lover, teacher, mage, god, or trouble maker, or a combination of any of the above.

For the readers who have been following not only the Silver Wyrm quartet, but the Deverry saga, I will say this, read every single page until there is nothing but blank pages left. If you don't you might miss out on something that will make you kick yourselves later. But after reading THE SILVER MAGE you will find yourself smiling, even though this is the very final book. Or are their other stories to tell?

Book Summary

"Prepare to get lost in the magic" (VOYA) of Katharine Kerr's newest Deverry fantasy.

The Horsekin are assembling along Prince Dar's northern border, and the Deverry alliance simply does not have the men and resources to prevent their enemies from moving into the wilderness areas known as the Ghostlands. But suddenly, the Dwrgi folk and the dragons come to Dar's aid, tipping the balance in their favor and offering Dar's people a chance to defeat the Horsekin once and for all.
