Caitlyn Hurst has a bit of a temper when provoked, and Alexander MacLean knows exactly how to rile her. Her recent outburst resulted in her twin sister's marriage, and her unexpected whisking away from society. After being secluded for a few months, she has been invited to a duchess's house party, and her parents are graciously allowing her to attend. Unfortunately, Laird MacLean is also a guest, and she soon warrants that he is the reason for her invitation. Once she realizes that his sole purpose is to mete out daily doses of humiliation, she confronts him with a friendly proposal to put an end to their animosity once and for all. Each one must come up with a set of tasks based on a myth for the other to perform, and the winner receives their request. Caitlyn cannot wait to bring Alexander to his knees and at her mercy when she wins their little contest. Has she misjudged Alexander's ambition to win? Has she underestimated the depth of her feelings for the man?

Alexander MacLean has been plotting his revenge against Caitlyn Hurst since she tried to trap him into marriage. She has the ability to stir his ire and he knows that he will enjoy punishing her for the problems she has caused his family and to soothe his own damaged pride. Unfortunately, his plans seem to backfire and he ends up going to her rescue more often than not. When she offers up a wager, he is more than happy to comply knowing that he will easily win this competition. He cannot wait to have her warming his bed in whatever form he desires. Has he underestimated Miss Hurst's cunning ability to scramble a man's wits? Has he miscalculated his heart's reaction to the young lady?

Karen Hawkins delivers a delightful historical romance sprinkled with amusing characters. Caitlyn has nothing to lose as she has already ruined her season with a scandal, so she is out to have a little fun. Alexander has everything to lose including his heart as the diabolical Caitlyn holds the key to his complete surrender. Ms. Hawkins has created a fun scheme and we have the pleasure of watching Caitlyn and Alexander match wits as they rise to the challenge to outdo the other. I loved the easy flowing banter between the couple and found the story to be an overall entertaining read. THE LAIRD WHO LOVED ME flirts with the reader leaving us laughing and ready for another conquest.

Book Summary

Handsome Alexander MacLean enjoyed his intoxicating flirtation with lovely Caitlyn Hurst...until she embarrassed him in front of the entire ton. Orchestrating Caitlyn's attendance at a fashionable house party, Alexander plots her downfall. But to his fury, her charm and wit thwart his plan to ruin her.

Her disastrous London season left Caitlyn filled with regret and determined to make things right with Alexander. She's delighted to find him at the house party to which she's unexpectedly invited -- but it's clear that the sexy, arrogant Highlander hasn't forgiven her. So Caitlyn comes up with a bold scheme, proposing an unusual contest drawn from legend: each must complete a set of "mythic" tasks. If Caitlyn succeeds, Alexander promises to relent and forgive her previous rash behavior; if he succeeds, she will join him in his bed! But can Caitlyn force Alexander to give up his quest for vengeance without giving up her heart in return?
