Lord Marrack is disgusted when his friend, the Earl of Crosshaven, purposefully ruins the reputation of a young woman. He has cut off his friendship with the Earl. Sabine Godard has been raised by her uncle, Sir Henry Godard. Her beauty and intelligence are but two of her assests.

Over a year later, Edward, now the Marquess is traveling in Turkey when he meets Miss Godard and her uncle. Edward's brother has died leaving Edward the title and the responsibilities. Edward's grief over his brother's death and the sorrow he feels at the breaking of his engagement have sent him around the world.

Miss Godard's beauty draws men to her everywhere. Her uncle no longer trusts her but she cannot leave him due to his poor health. Arthritis is slowly crippling him. Sabine is his scribe and companion. She is drawn to the Marquess but she is determined to resist his charms.

Sir Henry and Miss Godard are to leave Constantinople and travel to the palace of the Nazim Pasha in Kilis. Despite Foye's arguments about their safety, Sir Henry is determined to go since he wants to finsh this last book.

Before the Nazim Pasha arrives to escort the Godard's to Kilis, Foye finds himself drawn more and more to the company of Miss Godard. They declare their love for each other and promise to wait for each other, knowing that Sir Henry cannot last forever.

Less than a week after saying goodbye to Sabine, Foye is on his way to Kilis. He hires a band of mercenaries to protect him as they head to Kilis. On his arrival in Kilis, he is stunned to learn of the death of Sir Henry. His efforts to see Sabine are thwarted by the Nazim Pasha.

Knowing that the Sabine is alone in the world, he offers to escort her to England. The Nazim Pasha refuses to discuss any scenario allowing her to leave his palace without the escort of a relative. Foye knows that the Nazim Pasha will never let her go so he starts negotiations to buy her back from the Pasha. At the same time, he makes plans with the aid of a young servant to rescue Sabine from the palace.

The rescue is accomplished with a great deal of effort. Foye and his retinue set out to return to England. Sabine is forced to travel as a young Arabic boy to conceal her identity. When the Nazim Pasha arrives and insists on escorting Foye, the danger of detection increases dramatically.

Sabine and Foye make it to the home of a friend of his where they are married. Word has come that Sabine has died of the same illness that killed her uncle. Unfortunately, they are unable to travel on the same ship. Sabine arrives in England only to discover that all her uncle's possessions have been sold since word of her death had reached England. Sabine goes to the Foye's lawyer only to discover that she is a widow. The ship Foye was on was sunk without survivors.

Ms. Jewel has written a wonderfully emotional story. The characters are interesting and engaging. Their pasts have formed them as they are in this book. The story is packed with adventure and danger. Over every other emotion, the reader will experience the depth of the love between Edward and Sabine. This is one of the best books I've read all year. I would highly recommend it to others.
