Past and present collide in Stony Mill, Indiana, involving novice empathy/witch Maggie O'Neill in one of her most frightening adventures. A carnival is the chosen fundraiser for the local Baptist Church. The groundbreaking for the church reveals an underground room. The next day the body of Ronnie Maddox is discovered. An arrest is made, though Maggie is sure the suspect, Tyler Barnett is innocent. She is convinced of his innocence when she is visited by the spirit of Elias. Through the use of the Ouija board, Maggie and her friends discover Elias died in the underground room. And Elias has plenty to say, in a round-about way, about the current happenings in Stony Mill. Though all of his messages aren't clear, his warning to Maggie to be careful is spelled out perfectly on the Ouija board.

Maggie discovers more than one person is keeping a secret regarding Ronnie's death. And her almost boyfriend, Tom, has a secret that once revealed makes Maggie question where their relationship is going. There's also the tempting distraction of her friend Marcus. As her investigation brings her closer to the killer, Maggie also gets closer to Marcus, and soon realizes she's going to have to make a difficult choice, if she survives long enough to take things to the next level with the sexy psychic.

WHERE THERE'S A WITCH is the fifth in Madelyn Alt's series of Bewitching mysteries, and an entertaining return to the town of Stony Mill. The story was a bit of a slow start, but once Elias makes his presence known and the members of the N.I.G.H.T.S. go into investigation mode, it picks up pace, keeping this reader on edge as the Ouija board spelled out cryptic messages. Maggie is a thoroughly entertaining heroine, and her relationship highs and lows provide an interesting distraction to the spooky realities of a murder and persistent spirit. WHERE THERE'S A WITCH is a fun read Ms. Alt's fans are sure to enjoy.
