Daniel Stamfield breaks out in a rash when anyone lies to him. It was an invaluable trait when he was interrogating soldiers in the army. In society, it makes his life miserable. When his mother and sister arrive in London, Daniel must present himself at his uncle's home. Lady Cora expects Daniel to live at Royce House with them and escort them around town. Daniel is outraged when he learns that Corisande Abbott has come to town with his family.

He despises her for eloping with Lieutenant Snelling; putting him in a position that had him helping her father catch up with them. The woman has been ruined; how can she expect to find a husband?

Corisande knows how Daniel feels about her. She just prays that he refrains from exposing her sins to the town before she can find a husband. Her expectations are low. All she needs is someone to rescue her from her father so that she can live a quiet life.

As Daniel learns more about Corie and the abuse she has suffered from her father, he finds himself attracted to her. When rumors start circulating about her scandalous past, Daniel and his family will be forced to defend her; even lying for her, as painful as that is for him.

Daniel learns that he can tell by feeling when items are fake. He is drawn into helping the government discern forged pound notes which are starting to show up in London. As Daniel's involvement deepens in exposing the criminals, the rumors about Corie continue to spread. When Corie's chance of finding a husband become bleak, Daniel steps in and enters an engagement with her.

Barbara Metzger has continued her story of the family who can always tell a lie. Daniel is such an interesting character that it was a pleasure to read his story. There is enough humor to lighten the serious subjects that the author broaches in this book. Fans of Metzger won't want to miss this book. If you haven't read her, then search out the first in this series and settle down to enjoy.
