Co-owner of the Rockin' Security team Spike Berenger has always been a fan of the Chicago Progressive "Chicagoprog" musical style. When he's called in by a member of one of the bands to investigate the deaths of several musicians, he and partner Suzanne Prescott hightail it from New York to Chicago. His familiarity with the denizens of the style would seem to make him a key expert into the decades-old Chicagoprog scene; that Spike becomes a witness to the escalating violence only makes the local detectives suspicious of his involvement, so he keeps being frozen out of music-related evidence.

Following trails and interviewing the rapidly-dwindling musicians on their interwoven histories and the long- missing groupie "ghost" they feel is stalking them, Spike attempts to work under the radar to solve the mystery. However, every new lead unearths more unusual information, and Spike and Suzanne not only are getting no help from the police, they feel that some of the band members are also stonewalling them about the past and the "ghost."

Filled with musical references, tongue-in-cheek humor and fast-paced action, DARK SIDE OF THE MORGUE is a must for fans of rock-n-roll and mystery investigations alike. Benson artfully encourages the reader to predict various possible outcomes with his expert prose and springs surprises around every corner.

Book Summary

Musicians in progressive rock bands in Chicago are being murdered—one by one. The local police have no clues, but several of the musicians who fear they’re next on the hit list claim that the killer is a ghost from the past—a woman who was reported missing and presumed dead for over thirty years!

The Rockin’ Security team is called into action. Spike and his partner, Suzanne Prescott, travel to Chicago to investigate the case, only to find that no one wants to talk. As Spike digs deeper, he begins to unearth a lode of deadly secrets involving sex, psychedelic drugs, and, of course, rock ‘n’ roll. And it isn’t long before the private detective becomes a pawn in a very dangerous game.
