All over the city, homeless people are dying. As she and her friend, Quinton, track the people who died, she learns more about the underground of Seattle and was can live down there. There is a creature of legend who is taking the bodies of the homeless and creating zombies.
At first, the belief is that the vampires are taking the homeless. The leader of the vampires disavows all knowledge of the deaths and promises Harper that none of his people will impede her investigation. With the help of a Native American morgue worker, Harper is able to track down the identity of the monster. They will learn that the creature has escaped in the past and each time mysterious deaths occurred. Harper will have to learn how to return the creature to the realms in which it belongs.
A fascinating urban fantasy that drew me in and released me reluctantly as the story ended. Fans of Ms. Richardson's previous books won't want to miss this latest installment in the story of an unusual private eye. If you haven't read Ms. Richardson, make sure to pick them up.
This title is the third in the series. It stood alone well enough that I never felt that I was missing any of the back story. Reading UNDERGROUND made me seek out the first two titles so that I could learn more about Harper and the Seattle she inhabits.
Book Summary
Harper Blaine was
your average small-time P.I. until she died—for two minutes.
Now Harper
is a Greywalker—walking the thin line between the living
world and the
paranormal realm. And she’s discovering that her new
abilities are
landing her all sorts of “strange” cases.
Pioneer Square’s homeless are turning up dead and mutilated, and
zombies have been seen roaming the underground—the city
buried beneath
modern Seattle. When Harper’s friend Quinton believes he may be
implicated in the deaths, he persuades her to investigate.
But the
killer is no mere murderer—it is a creature of ancient
legend. And
Harper must deal with both the living and the dead to stop
the monster
and its master…unless they stop her first.
