Kestrel lives in a society which takes children from the parents if they show any signs of magical talent. Her parents died to protect her from being taken away by the feared Danisoba and she grew up on the streets. Disdaining those who would take her away from the life she leads, Kestrel takes to the sea and piracy. The sea cancels out the magic of most practioners.

Only, it doesn't affect Kestrel's ability to whistle up a wind for the ship. Captain Binns has learned to appreciate Kestrel's talents, both magical and non-magical. Her loyalty and hard work have earned her the position of quartermaster on the Wolfshead. She is returning to port when they see a large ship with a rakish looking man on deck. One minute the ship is there, the next it's gone.

Kestrel and Artie are conducting business when the Captain is arrested for piracy. The Wolfshead is gone but the mysterious ship isn't. Kestrel and her crew must evade the Danisobans, the authorities and the crew of the ship they intend to steal to rescue their captain.

Now, Kestrel has to work with the rakish man, McAvery, whom she distrusts profoundly, to rescue Binns and subvert a plot to overthrow King.

McAvery is a charming rogue who lies without compunction. Determined to think the worst of him, Kestrel finds that he is so much more as they work, sometimes in harmony, to find Artie. He is a perfect foil to Kestrel who is serious, intelligent, and determined. As events unfold, Kestrel will learn that she knew less about Artie and his life than she thought.

I loved MAD KESTREL! It's fast-paced, entertaining and intriguing. The end was just what was needed to finish the story and leave the author in a perfect position to continue the series. Personally, I hope she does. Kestrel and McAvery together would keep me entertained for hours. The romantic fantasy has just taken a step forward in quality and a step back to a time of pirates and their dangerous lives.

Book Summary

A rip-roaring pirate romance and mystery
In a world where infants with magical powers are torn from their parents to be raised by the mysterious and powerful Danisoba, who have a monopoly on magic, Kestrel has managed to keep her abilities concealed—and herself free. First hiding in back alleys as a street urchin, she hid when they killed her parents, and then served as a young tavern maid before escaping to sea, where magic is cancelled by water.
Now an adult, as the quartermaster of a pirate ship, Kestrel loves the freedom of living on the seas. But her way of life could end if anyone on board learns her closely guarded secret—that she has magical control over the wind.
One day a black ship appears, and her life changes. Its captain is a handsome rogue of whom Kestrel is strangely, constantly aware.
When Kestrel’s captain is led into a trap and is arrested, she gathers her crew and sets sail in relentless pursuit. . . .
