Only, it doesn't affect Kestrel's ability to whistle up a wind for the ship. Captain Binns has learned to appreciate Kestrel's talents, both magical and non-magical. Her loyalty and hard work have earned her the position of quartermaster on the Wolfshead. She is returning to port when they see a large ship with a rakish looking man on deck. One minute the ship is there, the next it's gone.
Kestrel and Artie are conducting business when the Captain is arrested for piracy. The Wolfshead is gone but the mysterious ship isn't. Kestrel and her crew must evade the Danisobans, the authorities and the crew of the ship they intend to steal to rescue their captain.
Now, Kestrel has to work with the rakish man, McAvery, whom she distrusts profoundly, to rescue Binns and subvert a plot to overthrow King.
McAvery is a charming rogue who lies without compunction. Determined to think the worst of him, Kestrel finds that he is so much more as they work, sometimes in harmony, to find Artie. He is a perfect foil to Kestrel who is serious, intelligent, and determined. As events unfold, Kestrel will learn that she knew less about Artie and his life than she thought.
I loved MAD KESTREL! It's fast-paced, entertaining and intriguing. The end was just what was needed to finish the story and leave the author in a perfect position to continue the series. Personally, I hope she does. Kestrel and McAvery together would keep me entertained for hours. The romantic fantasy has just taken a step forward in quality and a step back to a time of pirates and their dangerous lives.
