As his cell door rattles, a guard ushers in the woman dressed head-to-toe in black, her face hidden behind a heavy veil. Reed has heard about a woman called The Black Widow, who is rumored to select a prisoner to make her love slave, then kill him when she tires of him. Even though that story can't be confirmed, it's known that money is exchanged and the man of her choice is carried out of prison and never heard from again. The Black Widow points to Reed and says, "This one."
Fleur Fontaine dies a little each time she walks into the prison and sees so much human suffering. No man deserves to be treated like an animal or beaten simply because he's an aristocrat. Fleur lives in constant fear that one day her identity as The Black Widow and her work for England will be discovered.
Reed soon learns that Fleur is more than she seems. She nurses him back to health so he can return to England and take his rightful place as the Earl of Hunthurst following his brother's death, a title he does not want, and produce an heir. Reed also learns that Fleur is an escapee from the guillotine, a French countess, a brave woman working for the English whose life is in grave danger. Reed and Fleur flee to London just moments before they are captured by French zealots.
It's in England where they continue their long journey together discovering truths much too precious to ignore.
Experience this wonderful adventure Ms. Mason takes us on; a journey of the heart with twists and turns around every bend. THE PRICE OF PLEASURE is a sizzling romance, emotionally powerful and superbly detailed. It's a memorable must-read.
Book Summary
The Black Widow
That was what she was called by the desperate prisoners incarcerated in Devil's Chateau. Young and beautiful, she was rumored to buy men for purposes both scandalous and secret. Whatever she did with them one thing was certain: Her unfortunate victims were never seen again. But when she whisked Reed Harwood out of the cell where he'd been left to die for spying against the French, he discovered the lady was not al she seemed.
Fleur Fontaine was the most exquisitely sensual woman he'd ever met, yet there was an innocence about her that belied her sordid reputation. Though he'd been tortured and starved by his jailors, his body reacted eagerly to her nearness. Only a dead man would fail to respond to the sight of those ebony curls, the touch of those luscious lips. Reed was not head yet, but was he willing to pay.
