Brian Conway and Hayden MacNulty have had a special relationship since childhood starting from the moment he first decided to protect this strange little waif in a dirty and bedraggled ghost outfit who arrived on his door that fateful Hallowe'en night.

From friends to lovers to friends to foes and back again, Hayden and Brian continue to eclipse their lives, never quite connecting, but never able to lose each other. For her part, Kathleen Conway, Brian's mom, also felt an instant connection to Hayden and advised her as she pursued becoming a nurse like Kathleen and helped her raise her daughter, Livie, who is also Kathleen's grandchild in her wonderful family home on Briar Hill Road. Their love for each other was strong, but would it be strong enough to sustain them all as Kathleen waged her battle with breast cancer?

By weaving the past with the present, Holly Jacobs has crafted a heartfelt tale of two strong willed characters as they come to terms with their life situations, emotions and determination to do the right thing. The plotline is realistic and will hold you in suspense as all the threads of the story are linked together in a wonderful story of everlasting love. For my part, I found myself getting too impatient with both Hayden and Brian as they struggled to outthink their hearts, nevertheless, it still is a very intriguing and enjoyable read.

Book Summary

Home isn't a place--it's a feeling

Brian Conway is Hayden MacNulty's hero from the start. One Halloween, she knocks on his door, and before long, her puppy love turns serious. His mother, Kathleen, welcomes her with open arms. Brian's house, with its neat shutters and window boxes, isn't just a home. It's family.

As the years pass and life pulls them in a different directions, Brian remains Hayden's touchstone, her best friend. So how is it that they never seem to get it right when they're together? Not even the child they bring into the world can persuade Hayden to accept Brian's proposals.

But a life-altering challenge can change almost anything, and in one special moment Hayden knows it's time to say, "I do."
