Sarah Clyburn is ready to end her marriage of one year to her husband Bram. Bram is deciding whether he should run in the government as their state's senator. But Sarah is being blackmailed about her past, and if it comes out that she was an escort during her college years, Bram's chances as senator will be ruined along with their reputation. Even though Bram knows all about Sarah's past, Sarah is about to sacrifice herself so Bram can have his dream. Bram's grandparents, Evvie and Edgar know all too well what their grandchildren are experiencing. As Evvie takes aside Sarah and Edgar does the same with Bram, they both tell how they met each other during the depression of the 1930's and up through World War II. It seems that when Evvie was sixteen, she had no other means to help support her family and became a prostitute at Miss Hattie's brothel. There she meets Edgar and they fall in love, but Evvie's work and Edgar's pride almost ruins their relationship. Sarah and Bran listen to past memories of a different time how in the end love does conquer all. But will Evvie and Edgar's story help Sarah and Bram's marriage? Will Bram still go forth and try to become a high ranking official regardless of the fact that his and Sarah's relationship maybe ruined forever? UPSTAIRS AT MISS HATTIE'S is a wonderful and emotional love story that spans sixty-five years. Ken Casper truly caught my attention from the first chapter with his skill at writing this beautiful love between Evvie and Edgar. I find this to be a wonderful and emotional read. Not many can write a story of this magnitude and show the all encompassing love that Evvie and Edgar have for each other. We are given a touchy topic the world of paid sex and prostitutes that are not usually touched upon in a romance of this nature. I was pleasantly surprised how Evvie made no excuses for the actions she took and that of Edgar who shows his undying devotion for his dear wife. I recommend this story for anyone who wants to be moved to tears.

Book Summary

Young Bram and Sarah Clyburn are about to end their marriage and go their separate ways—a big mistake in the minds of Bram's grandparents, Evvie and Edgar, the same mistake they almost made many decades ago.

Evvie's family had come to Texas from the dust bowl of Oklahoma, looking for opportunity but finding only hardship in the waning days of the Depression. Desperate times sometimes require desperate measures, and Evvie took them— measures that shamed her and threatened Edgar's love. But during the war years of sacrifice and separation they learned that their love could surmount anything—even Evvie's shameful past.

After sixty-five years, they share their shocking story for the first time. Will it be enough to save Bram and Sarah's marriage?
