Rosie DeWitt is a well-respected political consultant, known for her witty remarks and keen intuitive abilities to get to the heart of the matter where politics are concerned. Fiercely independent, Rosie has also managed to keep her precocious five-year-old son, Casey, and her secret about his father out of the limelight. A tough job to pull off given the media spotlight on politics, but she had succeeded so far.

Now, the opportunity of the lifetime comes along that will make her political career, but will it be the unmaking of her carefully concealed private live? No one says "No" when Vivian McCloud comes calling and she is keen to have Rosie be Hudson's, her only surviving son, campaign manager. The flash of the camera and the sight of newshound Amy Furokawa's crew quickly lets Rosie know that all the animals aren't in the zoo cages. With a clever trick and a twenty-dollar bill, she is able to spirit Casey and Hudson away from Amy's relentless probings, but how long can she continue to hold her finger in the cracking dam? Once her secret is out and the dam is burst, she knows that she will never be able to work in politics again. And sure as she knows politics, once Hudson learns of her secret, she realizes that that the fallout of this dam burst will douse any flames of romance and knock her career off the rails. Rosie knows she has no choice but to resign and leave him forever, but will that be enough?

Melinda Curtis has crafted a fast paced and intriguing plot with two very strong willed Type A people, both intent on having their own way. Set against the political backdrop of a San Francisco mayoralty race, you will delight in the twists of fate and political maneuverings that emerge from this romantic power struggle and battle of wills. I was also pleased to learn that some of the secondary characters, terrific in their own right, will have center stage in Curtis' next book. A word of caution: Just be very careful reading this book on the bus or subway. I missed my stop twice as the story is just too engrossing and I should have learned after the first time! Enjoy!
