Lady Fiona Turnbridge, illegitimate daughter of a late duke, tours the ballrooms perusing all the men who, despite her large dowry, will not offer matrimony. They consider her a nice young woman, but eccentric. Rumor has it that she can see into a man's soul. Instead of trying to find happiness pursing marriage, Fiona finds fulfillment by educating herself in the study of medicine and lavishing her love on her cat, Beeps. Returning home late from a ball, Fiona finds Beeps with a severely injured leg. Holding Beeps within her arms, she runs to Dr. Cabott's house.

Lord Ian Cabott, the Duke of Dunsford, rejecting the dictates of members of the peerage, has entered into a profession by becoming a medical doctor. He knows he can ignore some of society's rules, but acquiring a proper wife will placate society and benefit his dream of opening a hospital for the indigent. A wife would also be of assistance with his newly acquired ward, who's confined to a wheelchair following an injury. Late one night, someone pounds on his door. When Ian opens it, he's confronted with Lady Fiona holding a pistol demanding he treat her cat.

The two of them work through the night saving her beloved pet. Ian, an honorable man, realizes being alone with Fiona has compromised her reputation. He offers marriage and is astounded when she declines. Fiona has always put others first, but this time her own happiness will be foremost.

Ms. LaFoy ends her sisters' trilogy with the innocent but complex Fiona. She's a fascinating character with her gift of sight and her medical knowledge. Ian is self-absorbed and clueless about what Fiona desires. Readers will enjoy watching him grow into the man of Fiona's dreams. My only complaint is that I wish Ms. LaFoy had delved a little more deeply into Fiona's gift of sight as the novel progressed.
