Catherine and Joely Doyle have grown up without a father. Their mother, Mimi, really wasn't the mother they needed as tender young girls. Catherine, or Cat as she's known, at 10 years of age started to raise her infant sister, Joely, while Mimi slipped in and out of lows and distorted views of reality always awaiting the day her husband would come back to the family.

As an adult, Cat has woven the life she hopes will be enough. Her tidy well-kept life includes the father of her expected baby, a man she won't be marrying, tucked away in Manhattan blissfully ignorant of Cat's past, her family or anything else she's deemed dangerous to reveal. This is the only way she can keep control of her life. Michael Yanovsky is a dream of a man, full of patience and hope. Cat spends a few days a month with Michael in Manhattan and the rest of the time in Maine, close to her mother to watch out for her out of daughterly duty.

Joely lives in Scotland with William Bishop and his beautiful, adorable seven-year-old daughter, Annabelle. Joely has taken over the maternal role after Annabelle's mother died of cancer. Joely adores the little girl, but as far as a relationship becoming permanent, she's deathly afraid of unlocking her heart. She's a scientist, a practical thinker who never lets emotions inside. She can't let William in and she can't go home due to painful memories.

Life for these two young women can't stay safe and devoid of emotions. Mimi has a stroke and broken bones, barely escaping a fire in her house. She lies in a hospital bed and the paparazzi have discovered this bit of information. Mimi and her husband, Mark, were famous musicians of the 60s and helped to shape American pop culture.

Cat and Joely are now faced with revealing their painful pasts to the men in their lives, coming to grips with life's realities and discovering that hurts can be healed. Equally important, they learn that they can forgive themselves and open their hearts.

SOMEONE LIKE YOU is a touching, emotional story of two women's search for the answers to life. It's full of the uplifting possibilities we search for in our lives; those special moments when the sun rises and its rays burst through the darkened clouds, and we know what we must do. I so enjoyed this story.
