Trina Roberts is in the fast lane to higher middle-management when after a drunken night of passionate sex, she becomes pregnant. Her priorities change with the birth of her daughter, and she balances her career with being a single parent. Her ambitions haven't shifted; they've just taken on a slower pace.

And the absentee father? Mr. Walker Gordon? The man she swooned over, but who treated her like she was just a good friend? Until that night anyway. He's in Europe, licking his wounds after being jilted at the alter in front of nation wide television cameras by another woman. He doesn't know Trina is even pregnant, and she has no plans on enlightening him. He's already made his position about parenthood very clear. The Gordon men make lousy husbands, and worse fathers.

Arriving late as usual to a meeting, Trina finds that Walker Gordon has returned from Europe. Over his humiliation at being dumped by his fiancé, his self confidence has returned, and so has his drive to get the Bellagio account. Trina is assigned to be his point person, forcing them into working together.

Trina has made some whopper mistakes in her life. The birth of Madeline Roberts, Maddie, wasn't planned, but she is a blessing. More precious than anything else in Trina's life, Maddie has spanned the volatile bridge between her mother and her. She won't let anything hurt her baby, including Walker who only feels a sense of moral responsibility. That's not good enough.

When Walker Gordon returns to the states, he is confused by Trina distant behavior. He thought they had parted on good terms. Although the details of that night are still a lot blurred, the pleasure seemed to have been mutual. Finally confronting her, he is shocked to be told she is the mother of a six month old carrot top colored hair little girl, and surprise! He's the father. Mutually they agree to keep the Maddie's paternity a secret.

Trina and Walker agree: they are not suited for each other. With the encouragement and down right pushing of friends and family, Trina is set up and goes out on dates: some with positive results and others with laughable tales. Walker starts remembering their drunken night. Was it really just a slip of their judgment, that his broken humiliated heart had caused it? Or was there something more that he hasn't acknowledged, more than just comfortable companionship between them? While Walker questions his motives, Trina still has doubts about the relation between Walker and Maddie. Unfamiliar with each other, when they're together their reaction is a mixture of fear and curiosity.

Are you a fan of Gilmore Girls? I am. The daughter-mother-grandmother relationship in the Gilmore Girls reminds me of Leanne Banks' UNDERFOOT between Maddie, Trina, and Audrey. No issues can be fixed without a serious load of guilt and stress in UNDERFOOT. The situations the characters get into seem real. The characters are quirky and fun to read. I couldn't stop smiling or reading.

Book Summary

Bellagio, Inc. public relations genius Trina Roberts had been a bad, bad girl when she'd gone to bed with a recently jilted groom and wound up pregnant. She knew Walker Gordon wasn't looking for forever -- at least not with her. So when he took a job overseas, she sort of neglected to tell him about the baby on the way.

Well, now he's back . . . and he's just figured out the truth.

Walker had been reeling from a very public breakup when Trina had offered solace he couldn't deny. He'd never expected the result would make him somebody's daddy! Trina claimed not to need anything from him, but he was determined that his child have a father; he just didn't know if it should be him. Because a father's shoes . . . well, those he wasn't sure he could fill.
