Natalie's best pal has just moved because of her father's new job. Natalie is delighted when a handsome brown and white pinto horse (which would be called skewbald where I live) is brought in to the Second Chance Ranch in this series for middle-grade readers. Natalie would like a horse of her own, to train for barrel racing. But a ride on Tango doesn't go as well as she'd hoped. Meanwhile, a new girl in school, Darcy, would be glad of Natalie's friendship... but would that be disloyal?
Other animals include dogs, with an autism service dog and some gorgeous puppies. I would say the book would suit readers from ten to fifteen, especially girls. We meet a girl with autism who is part of a loving family and managing well with her condition. This may help younger readers to understand learning disabilities and how best to cope with them.
Author Kelsey Abrams has worked on a horse rescue farm and she lives
in Massachusetts, with a few other series of horse stories in her
portfolio. She shows here that everyone is different and you can't
expect someone new to do exactly as you would like. I also enjoyed the
line drawings by Jomike Tejido, illustrating the adventures nicely.

Natalie has a lot on her plate. She can't seem to get Second Chance Ranch's newest rescued horse, Tango, to barrel race. She's also missing her best friend Sophia who recently moved away. A new girl in town, Darcy, seems like she could be bestie material, but she doesn't like to do any of the things Natalie and Sophia did together - and she's allergic to animals! Can Natalie help Tango learn a new skill while she learns a few of her own? At Second Chance Ranch, the Ramirez family cares and works to find homes for all kinds of animals on their 200-acre ranch in Texas._ Sisters Natalie (12), Abby (10), and twins Emily and Grace (9) all do their part to help out and give each animal the second chance it deserves.
