If you have read WINTERSONG, then you know that Liesl did get away from the Underground and the Goblin King so this book will be easy to get into. For new readers, who haven't read the first book may it perhaps take some time to get to know the characters and their history. However, I think is manageable since much of what happened in the last book is mentioned.
Six months have passed since the events in the last book since the Goblin King let Liesl go. She has written several letters to her brother Josef in Vienna, but he has never answered back. That is until she got words from Vienna that Josef needs her. And, with the help of a benefactor is she able together with her sister to travel to Vienna to find out what has happened. However, Lisel isn't completely free from her past. Forces are gathering against her, she who broke free from the Underground. She who should have been sacrificed. Old laws can't be broken so easily...
It took me one day to read this book. I just couldn't stop reading. S. Jae-Jones has a way of writing that makes the story flow in such a way that I keep turning page after page needing to find out what happens next. As a story, SHADOWSONG is perhaps not as gripping as WINTERSONG was for me. The first book was so bittersweet and I missed the Underground. I guess what I truly missed was the interaction between the Goblin King and Liesl. However, the last part of this book was marvelous, and that ending. It was so fitting, so perfect.
I will end this review by saying, read both books. Preferably in a row. You will not regret it!
Book Summary
The conclusion to the gorgeous and lush Wintersong
duology, Shadowsong by S. Jae-Jones.
Six
months after the end of Wintersong, Liesl is working
toward furthering both her brother’s and her own musical
careers. Although she is determined to look forward and not
behind, life in the world above is not as easy as Liesl had
hoped. Her younger brother Josef is cold, distant, and
withdrawn, while Liesl can’t forget the austere young man
she left beneath the earth, and the music he inspired in
her.
When troubling signs arise that the barrier
between worlds is crumbling, Liesl must return to the
Underground to unravel the mystery of life, death, and the
Goblin King—who he was, who he is, and who he will be. What
will it take to break the old laws once and for all? What is
the true meaning of sacrifice when the fate of the world—or
the ones Liesl loves—is in her hands?
