THE MAN WHO FELL FROM THE SKY is book 19 in the Wind River Reservation series and it's also the first book I have read in the series. And, as a newbie must I say that I had no problem whatsoever getting into the book. The only drawback is that there is a lot of history between Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley. They have been through a lot of things since they met years ago. But, reading this book just made me interested in getting the previous books to get to know them better.
Robert Walking Bear is found dead in the Wind River mountains and at first, it looks like it was an accident. However, he has for years been searching the mountains for Butch Cassidy's buried loot with a map that he inherited. Could it be that he was murdered for the treasure? Had he found it and someone killed him for it? There is no evidence of murder, but an anonymous Arapaho contacts both Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley claiming that he knows that Robert Walking Bear was murdered.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a favorite movie of mine. So, having a plot about Butch Cassidy's buried loot suited me perfect. Everything got even better when I realized that THE MAN WHO FELL FROM THE SKY also featured a storyline with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when they had just robbed a train. As for the story in the present, both Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley are not really working on the case per se, but they get involved with it when they are both contacted by the alleged witness. I did have my suspicion, an inkling to how everything was connected. I was very suspicious towards a person in the story and it turned out I was right when it came to guessing some of the events.
THE MAN WHO FELL FROM THE SKY is a good book. It's definitely no problem reading this one as a stand-alone. I liked Vicky Holden and Father John O'Malley quite a lot. Having an Arapaho attorney and a priest working cases together is certainly different from what I'm used to reading. It is definitely a pleasant change and I'm looking forward to reading more books in the series.
