Assistant Director Gabriel Stern doesn't want a partner, but his boss has put Sam as just that despite his protest. He's already lost two partners and he's not about to go through that again. It's not that he isn't interested in Sam, maybe that is part of the problem after having gone through what he had he's determined that Sam would not be the third to die.

Despite his desire to go alone ...they have a job to do: a serial killer who is striking every 12 hours and a Kite monster who seems to be murdering at random are on their plate. And though these don't seem related somehow they lead back to a military base known as Hopeworth. Is it possible that these deaths are a military cover-up or a more personal hit because all those who had died so far were red-headed adoptees? The investigation brings out something even closer to home for Gabriel ... Sam is an orphan and she has gold-red hair.

GENERATION 18 takes us back into author Keri Arthur's Spook Squad with this action packed sequel. Sam and Gabriel are back and still he is warring with his feelings and Sam is trying to have a life. Her past continues to have an impact as dreams and contacts with people keep adding to the mystery that is herself and not finding many answers she is almost afraid to ask ... because the answers are leading her to believe that she is indeed something other than she thinks. There is so much here ... not in the way of romance but in the continuing of the building of this fascinating world. Enjoyable but I would like to have seen a bit more loosening up of Gabriel or maybe introduce a little rivalry that might have shaken him up. I can't wait to get my hands on the next Spook Squad book and I am hoping Gabriel will come to his senses by then. I know Ms. Arthur does a good job with her HEA but I'm not sure what she can do with Gabriel ... except maybe a swift kick.
