THE SECRET DIAMOND SISTERS by Michelle Madow takes the reader into the glittering lives of the fabulously rich where she offers a glimpse of the unique troubles that arise from such wealth. For most of us, wealth like that is nearly incomprehensible, and that's where Ms. Madow does a great job with her main characters Savannah, Courtney, and Peyton. Each sister handles this newfound luck in different ways and it's easy to see a little of yourself in each sister. As the youngest, Savannah was sheltered from their mother's worst days of addiction by her older sisters, and while she's not selfish or unkind, she is a little bubble of hope and naivety. She glows with possibilities and grabs at this new life with both hands. Courtney is the one I most identified with. She's studious, hardworking, and low-key. The opulent lifestyle is hard for her to accept because she knows what she wants to do, but she's practical in realizing her father's money will give her the chance to afford her dream college. While Courtney is the one I'm most like, Peyton is my favorite character. I think she's the most complex. Savannah and Courtney are at times a little too sweet. They're nice and pleasant, but Peyton is another matter. She's rude and rebellious, sometimes a little dramatically, but she also makes some really bad choices that she has to deal with.

There is a hint of intrigue and mystery to why the girls never knew their father. I have my ideas, and I can't wait to see how Michelle Madow handles this in the next book, Diamonds in the Rough. That said, the plot in THE SECRET DIAMOND SISTERS is more about exploring their new world and learning what they should and shouldn't do than anything else. To me, this felt like a set-up to the more complex plot of finding out what happened to between their mother and father and why they were forced to live in poverty when they didn't have to.

THE SECRET DIAMOND SISTERS is glittery fun on the surface: The Vegas Strip, unlimited credit cards, VIP nightclubs, and young gorgeous people, but Michelle Madow takes the time to create characters with depth and personality. Their continued story and growth will be fun to read, and I'm looking forward to the second book, Diamonds in the Rough.
