I am a big fan of some of the author, Suzanne Weyn's, works, but THE BAR CODE PROPHECY doesn't work as well with me as the other books of hers that are set in the same world. This is a short, quick read, and it is full of some solid action, but the characters and plot line didn't stick with me as well as they could have. Grace has some great qualities: she's moderately intelligent, and she is likable. However, her and the other characters all feel two-dimensional. I feel like I was waiting for a real connection to come up towards them, but it didn't happen.
While there is no shortage of action in this book, and action done very well, it has room for more depth plot wise. It feels like a lot of action is happening without enough detail about how it is changing the plot, effecting the characters, etc. I love the idea behind the plot. The dystopian world THE BAR CODE PROPHECY is set in is actually deep and vastly interesting, but I feel the plot sort of just skimmed over it when it could have explored a lot more.
If you have read the other Bar Code Tattoo works and liked them, then I would say to give this a try. However, in the end, I was sadly not excited about it. If some of its good points had been expanded, I think this would have been a much more enjoyable read.
Book Summary
Grace lives a normal life. She goes to school during the day and works part-time at the multinational corporation Global-1. She has a crush on a boy named Eric and wonders if he feels the same way. And when she turns seventeen, she's going to get a bar code tattoo.
Her world seems very peaceful and predictable.
But then it explodes.
As soon as Grace gets the bar code tattoo, she comes home to find her family gone and Global-1 police swarming all over the place. In a split second, her life changes. Now she's on the run, part of a dark conspiracy and an extraordinary prophecy that will change the world forever.
