Marcus the gym trainer encourages Holton to get in shape by doing cardio work on a treadmill, to make his body burn fat. Later he can work on weights to build new muscle. Seeing that it's possible to improve, and enjoying the sight of good-looking men around him, Holton goes home inspired to clean out the fridge of heavy-calorie food. Three months later the brave man has stuck out six days a week of training, plus a healthier diet full of fresh food and devoid of sweet treats, and he can see the difference. His stamina's improved and his new clothes are the size he wore in college. He's not a saint - he's learnt to go straight to the gym from work; if he goes home first he's more likely to stay home. Now it's time to step up the weight work, and Marcus realises that Holton's definitely starting to look hot. Not only that, his confidence is better and after meeting a gay couple, Holton admits that he's gay too. But could he ever attract a guy like Marcus?
Andrew Grey's Workout series revolves around a modern gym and various gay members, each with a different personal situation. The social outlet is just as important as the fitness for many of them. Amusingly once Holton shapes up, all the single girls at his engineering office start flirting with him. This must put an extra pressure on gay men and luckily a nice gay lady realises Holton's situation and puts the girls right. At home Holton has to worry about his mother's deteriorating Alzheimer's, while trauma in his past has made him distrustful of personal contact - and he's allowed it to prevent him from reaching out to anyone. Well-rounded characters are a feature of this series and these romantic stories are always an enjoyable read. Give PERSONAL TRAINING a try - straight or gay, it may inspire you to get in shape for summer!
Book Summary
Determined not to end up like his seventy-year-old diabetic father, Holton knows he needs to make a change. His quest to improve his health drives him to the gym, where he meets Marcus, a trainer with the body of a demigod. For three months Holton works hard, watches what he eats, drops a few pounds—and catches Marcus's eye not only for his slimmer body but for his dedication.
Holton can barely believe it when Marcus asks him out, but he isn’t about to say no. Despite several common interests, though, Marcus and Holton have some roadblocks to overcome. A harrowing event from Holton’s past has made him gun-shy, and Marcus has insecurities of his own. If their relationship is going to work, they’ll have to get past their hang-ups and prove that what really matters is the man inside.
