Because the bar code tattoo is used for everything from identification to financing and everything in between, your family's medical history is at the disposal of Global-1, a mega-corporation that has its fingers in everything including the government. If there is any history of disease in your family, physical or mental, Global-1 can freeze your bank accounts, refuse medical treatment, terminate you from your job, and remove you from your home. Refusing the tattoo means that one forfeits a normal life. Since it is the law, a tattoo-less person goes on the run and lives on the fringes of society.
This book series focuses on society in the near future in which the government tries to enforce its strict control over the people by using the bar code tattoo. It is a scary concept, but definitely one that is not too far of a stretch. Kayla Reed decides to do a little digging into her own family history and discovers some surprising results. Kayla finds out that she is one of six clones with avian DNA, each of her "sisters" have a special gift such as telepathy, visions, or telekinesis culminating in the sixth clone, who has the most gifts and the most genetic bird mutation. Kayla and her friends race to save the other clones and tell the world about Global-1's dirty little secrets.
The Bar Code series is written for young adults and is an easy read. There isn't a lot of characterization in THE BAR CODE REBELLION but is heavy on the fast-paced, non-stop action. The book was well written and thought-provoking and the overall ideas in this book are what make it a good read for the younger generation.
Book Summary
The second book in the action-packed Bar Code series.
They want your identity. They want your freedom. They can't have them. The bar code rebellion.
Kayla has resisted getting the bar code tattoo, even though it's mean forfeiting a "normal" life. Without the tattoo, she's an exile. But she can't stay an exile for long. . . .
For reasons she doesn't completely understand--but will soon discover--Kayla is at the center of a lethal conspiracy that will soon threaten the very notion of freedom. Kayla can either give in to the bar code, or she can join the resistance and fight it. The choice, for her, is clear:
It's time to fight.
They want your identity. They want your freedom. They can't have them.
The bar code rebellion.
