Ruby drove her lover away via her magic for undisclosed reasons and is shocked to see him walking toward her in the beginning of the book. However, Derek doesn't come without a request. He needs Ruby to teach a local coven how to drive demons away from an energy fault line that has begun to crack open; the demons cannot slip through or they all will face the consequences. Ruby is naturally worried, but not for the reasons everyone believes. A darkness has been seeping into her and she is struggling between the light and dark.

Ruby's character is enviable. She is strong where others are weak and willing to defend those others where they would leave her. She displays intelligence and courage in large amounts throughout the story. Derek's character is also well-developed and the reader will be able to see just what it was about him that drew Ruby to him so long ago. Derek is also very persistent, he intends to discover the real reason Ruby drove him away and possibly rectify the situation.

Joey W. Hill does a great job with this new series. The plot is fast-paced and will keep the reader entertained throughout the story. Ruby and Derek have a strong connection that the author develops further and will make the reader believe in their love. The love scenes can be explicit and are actually believable. SOMETHING ABOUT WITCHES is an exciting start to a new series.
