Trying to recover from a hellish tornado, the residents of the town of Green, Louisiana find themselves faced with a political challenge, the State is attempting to close their schools. Newlyweds Lois and Chris Craig are knee deep in rebuilding their home destroyed by the tornado while fighting with all they are to keep their schools open. Chris is the school coach and Lois runs the Green News Item, a local newspaper.

From the Mayor of Green to every Green student, they face all obstacles to fight the bureaucracy. The principal of the school, along with the Mayor's ex-husband, consort together for personal reasons to further their own interests. Molly, a college student working for the paper, forms a walk in protest of the closing and involves the town residents in her quest. Rallying the community together reveals some surprising results for the small town. All that the town residents want are to return to the quiet and organized little town that they loved so much before the tornado.
