Inspector Pete Caldecutt of the New Scotland Yard is stubborn, willful, and dedicated to use all means possible in her goal to serve and protect. Her perfectionist attitude has made her feel like an outsider. That and her uncanny intuition.

Pete follows up on a missing child lead. It is hard to believe Jack Winter, her informant, because the last time she saw him, he was dead. Twelve years has passed and he's gone from a charismatic rocker who dabbled in magic to a drug addict looking to get his next score. Oh, he remembers Pete, and has a huge chip on his shoulder against her. For the life of her, she doesn't know why.

Jack tells her where the child will be found. She puts aside her suspicions and follows it up. Jack's information turns out true. Although found and alive the little girl has been blinded and is insane because of the experience. Before Pete can be assigned a new case, two more children disappear under the same circumstance. Jack came through once. Can lightening hit twice?

She's got a condition. If he's working with her, she won't have him stoned or high. She wants him straight. She's got to find those children now, not after a lengthy stay at a rehab clinic, and forces it on him cold turkey.

Jack's magic is real. Straight, it brings on his mean personality and visions of ghosts that linger out of normal human sight. The drugs kept the worst at bay, so keeping him clean long enough to solve her case is two steps forward, one step back. After they return from the Black, she finds he's shot up again. Somebody doesn't want Jack helping Pete, and they would prefer he return to the dead. Could it be something to do with the other worldly being tagging along with Pete since that night twelve years ago when Jack died? Not just nightmares but something that still commands her obedience? What Pete lacks in magic, she makes up for in sheer determination, but is strength strong enough to fight pure evil?

STREET MAGIC by Caitlin Kittredge starts with a bang and a twist. I haven't felt like skipping to the end of a book to see if it ends satisfactorily in a long time. This is a series I look forward to reading the next book.

Book Summary

Her name is Pete Caldecott. She was just sixteen when she met Jack Winter, a gorgeous, larger-than-life  mage who thrilled her with his witchcraft. Then a spirit Jack summoned killed him before Pete’s eyes—or so she thought.
